Week in Review

Week in Review 1/5/18

I hope everyone had a great week. Thanks for checking out my weekly series, Week in Review, posted every Friday. Enjoy a recap of how the week went down and tell me about yours.

1) What’s gotten my attention this week?

The Trump Tweet.  I don’t really like to talk about politics. What’s funny about that is I have a degree in political science and at one time had political aspirations. I realized it wasn’t for me. I like to study it, not make it my life or work. And even though I don’t like to talk about politics I do think it’s important to. The tricky part about that is having respectful open dialog where parties actually listen to each other instead of digging their heels in further for the sake of winning or convincing. There’s no learning or understanding in that.

I’ve decided my time and energy are valuable to me. I choose how and who I engage in political discussion with carefully. I don’t just look for people that agree with me, but people that return the active listening and respect I give them. That’s why you won’t see me make an off-handed comment all willy-nilly like on a someone’s Facebook post.

Having said all of that, I hope it gives some context. I don’t post anything political lightly.

I have always found it odd that the President seems to use his twitter account for a platform for policy and insults. It doesn’t seem very presidential. But after his tweet this week addressing Kim Jung Un and referring to the nuclear button on his desk, I’d by lying if I said the thought didn’t immediately cross my mind that he was going to get us all killed. Tweeting to dictators about nuclear weapons just seems crazy. Crazy.

2) What blog post should you check out?

Road to Rejection. It’s a post on the blog An Inviting Piece of the Pie. Wow. That’s all I could think once I finished reading it. It started out as a captivating recount of childhood rejection and ended with a powerful societal statement. It’s a beautiful piece and worth your time. Check it out.

3) What’s been going on this week?

Getting back in the swing of things. I had about 2 weeks off work over the holidays. It was amazing. I read. I watched TV. I slept. The kids slept! The entire break I didn’t even know what day of the week it was. But now I’m back in the office trying to remember that it’s a new month AND new year when I write the date on anything!

4) What’s going on this weekend?

Christmas 4 of 4. What? Christmas? Still? Yes you read that right. We had to postpone one of our Christmas celebrations due to family illness. We had a great holiday season (pics from our Christmas Train ride below), but I am ready to wrap it up!

Also, FYI look for a blog-anniversary link party next week. I am going to ask everyone to share a link to their favorite post from 2017. I’ll also share those links in my Week in Review posts.

5) Did you miss this post?

Book Reviews: Into the Water, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, Final Girls. Did you resolve to read more this year? Check out my latest book reviews.

6) What did my kids create?

After reading my post I live with a 5 year old inventor my blog friend over at DeepAsThoughts  suggested I add a new section to my Week in Review posts to include my son’s creations. Best. Idea. Ever. One thing he made this week was a real life Super Mario level in the living room out of bins, pillows, toys, and stacks of books.

And I can’t leave out my lil lady who just so happens to be a lil artist. She was experimenting with using multiple colors in single brush strokes there on the right. Brilliant, I know.

Thanks for reading. How were your holidays and your first week of the new year?

  1. Aww Lacey this is lovely. Your kids are excellent inventors. 🙂 Glad that you had 2 weeks off, that sounds awesome…and peaceful and relaxing.

I had a good first week. Getting myself organized for the new year. I’m considering doing some forgiveness work on the road, such as workshops in other cities. How does that sound to you?

Sending you MANY AMAZING adventures for the New Year, 🙂 Give your kids my love

  2. Hey Lacey– your 2 weeks off sounded pretty perfect! So glad you had a break in all you do. And couldn’t agree more about that tweet– it’s frightening to imagine what the results could be because of thoughtless words. And– more Christmas!! You really had a lot of Christmas this year!! Ours kind of went on and on too. Fun while it’s here, nice when things settle back to our little rut. Love your Friday posts!! xox

    1. Indeed, I can’t believe I am looking forward to the rut. I guess that makes us appreciate things the the holidays. Do you have an empty house now?

      1. HI Lacey– yep, the kids moved home a couple days ago– but mice have taken over their house!! (broken windows, still not repaired). So they are taking care of that and trying to settle back in. I’m missing the 3 girls already. Happy Birthday dear girl! Here’s to the best year ahead… xox
