Week in Review

Week in Review 3/9/18

I hope everyone had a great week. Thanks for checking out my weekly series, Week in Review, posted every Friday. Enjoy a recap of how the week went down and tell me about yours.

1) What’s gotten my attention this week?

Oklahoma teachers may strike.

Did you know that teachers don’t just work 9 months a year? They work portions of the their breaks during the school year, continue to work when school lets out, before the school year starts, and more than a regular work day when school is in session.

Did you know that education funding in Oklahoma has been cut by 28% over the last decade? Some rural school districts have only been going to school 4 days a week. How is that even possible? How have we let that happen? These cuts leave most teachers to supply for their classrooms out of their own pockets.

Did you know that Oklahoma is 49th in the country for teacher pay? We are making it hard for our teachers to earn a living while losing talent to surrounding states that pay more.

Did you know that some critics of teachers and the walk offer suggestions like online public school and sending your kids to private school? These scenarios single out my special needs son from a working class family from getting a basic education he deserves access to.

There’s a lot of positive about our state, but teacher and education support is not one of them.  With no apparent action on the horizon, there’s now talks of an organized teacher walkout to force the legislative hands who have promised and not delivered raises for years.  I’m sad it may come to that, but we need to see some change.

2) What blog post should you check out?

Meatloaf with Mushroom Gravy. There’s nothing better than family made comfort food. This post on the blog The Pantry Portfolio reminiscences about mom’s version, trying to replicate it, and ending up at a new classic. I made meatloaf this week solely because of this post. Check it out.

**I had a Meet and Greet recently where I asked bloggers to share their favorite posts from 2017. I’m going to a highlight a post a week from the links left. If you would like to leave a link and have a piece highlighted on a Week in Review post, click here and leave it in the comments.**

3) What’s been going on this week?

I got to see my sister, the one who moved across the country recently. She was in town to do some work on the house they are selling. The hubs and kids and I stopped by there for a quick hello one evening when my son proceeded to tell everyone a baby would be coming out of my vagina. Yeah so. . .

Later in the week I got to meet up with her again for a quick but sisters only lunch. Apparently the north doesn’t do Mexican as well as we do in the south or midwest or whatever Oklahoma is considered. So we had tacos. Getting to chat with her was the highlight of my week. Since food has been so hit or miss with me recently, being able to actually enjoy the tacos was a bonus.

4) What’s going on this weekend?

I’m not exactly sure. I’ve been sleeping so much on the weekends. I’d bet money that trend will continue. It’s supposed to be pretty Saturday though. So I hope I’m feeling okay and can get the kids and I out of the house to run around to do something.

I’d like to use our zoo membership a few more times before it expires at the end of May. I’m not sure if we will renew it this year. There’s also this double decker bus that drives around and doubles as a coffee shop. I think it’d be fun to take the kids and have hot chocolate on it.  And my 3-year-old has been begging to go to the library. I kinda feel like if a 3-year-old begs to go to the library I need to oblige, you know? We will see. I’m still at the “take it day by day and see how I feel” stage of pregnancy.

5) Did you miss this post?

1st Trimester Rants. Who can relate???

6) What did my kids create?

A leprechaun trap. I was at work when they concocted this one. So I’m not exactly sure what the actual trap here is. I can tell you though that we don’t ever have Lucky Charms in our house. There was a giant box on sale, so we have them in the house this week. Between that and St. Patrick’s Day coming up, they came up with the idea to make a leprechaun trap, and this is it. Also, they just look pretty darn cute.

Thanks for reading. How was your week? What are you up to this weekend?

  1. Teachers are so disrespected. Teachers are professionals. They have to have college degrees and in many states Master’s degrees. They have to continue their education to move forward. They need to keep up with the trends and times of life, teaching styles and so much more. Teaching is the profession that builds all other professions. ok rant over.
Glad you got to visit with your sister and have good tacos!

    1. Thanks Lynne. That doesn’t sound too bad right now. I think I would like to have plans and get stuff done, but truthfully just making it through the work week has worn me out!

      1. Shame Lacey. You really must rest as much as you can.
Well, if the weather is good, I plan on washing the dogs 🙂 and then I really need to get into the garden and do some gardening. Not overly exciting I know, but some things just need to be done. 🙂

  2. You are spot on about the education support in this state. It is embarrassing. I am so thankful you got to spend some time with Chels. I know she enjoyed it, too. Your kiddos are too creative, I just luv their leprechaun trap!
    Rest up!

  3. As a former teacher (now teacher coach) I 100% agree with your comments. Teachers need support and resources! Also, thank you so much for the meatloaf link. Nothing beats your families meatloaf – what did yours include? Happy Weekend – rest up! -Deb

  4. Oh Lacey your kids are adorable!! A leprachaun trap, how ingenious is that? 🙂

I’m so glad that you had time with your sister – and that you were able to keep down the tacos. The pics of the two of you are really great.

Continuing to send you love and blessings….I was in a Consciousness, Health and Healing program this weekend, which I think I may have mentioned to you. Catching up on email now! ❤
    Great post, Lacey.

  5. Love a kids who begs to go to the library Lacey!! And that double decker coffee bus sounds great! Plus– what is better than eating tacos with your sis. So glad you had the time alone! My sis and I went to Ikea last week and ended up at chipotle for tacos. There’s something about a sister– you can tell her absolutely everything and she knows all about you. Will she be down for a while?? Or back again to get the house settled?? — And the leprechaun trap! great! Every kids deserves an occasional box of fun cereal!! And also– that blog link made me hungry for meatloaf! Love your Friday posts Lacey!! So much good stuff! xox

    1. Thanks so much Rhonda 🙂 Yes sisters and tacos are 2 of the best things on Earth, and together it’s hard to beat. No, she’s gone back already to keep getting settled 😦 We don’t have an Ikea here, but if I’m ever close to one I am hitting it up! Everyone talks about them.
