Week in Review

Week in Review 7/13/19

I hope everyone had a great week. Thanks for checking out my weekly series posted every Friday, Week in Review. Enjoy a recap of how the week went down, and tell me about yours.

1) What’s gotten my attention this week?

The Embassy Suites in Overland Park, KS on Metcalf Ave. While my blog is typically not negative, I do like to be honest. So honestly, do yourself a favor and don’t ever stay at the Embassy Suites in Overland Park on Metcalf Avenue. I was going to do an entire post of the top 10 reasons why, but I’ll just leave this here for you to consider.

I saved up for my family to go to the Kansas City area, drove 3 small children 6 hours to get there, and assured my husband we would be comfortable because we were staying in an Embassy Suites.

It was hot. The AC in the building and room didn’t work well. Then housekeeping left a note that they did not change our bed because someone was asleep. We were gone. We called to order room service and were hung up on 5 times. I ended up just going to get random gas station food at the 7/11 next door before I had hungry, child meltdowns to deal with. After that all the little things just added up, like housekeeping not replacing our coffee in the room, being out cups at breakfast, no towels at the pool, bathroom in the pool out of order. . . . I could go on.

The place is outdated. The service is poor. This is coming from someone who is forgiving and has worked in the service industry before. When I attempted to complain onsite nobody followed up. When I complained to corporate, they apologized for the inconvenience and gave me some loyalty points. It really felt like an insincere and canned response. I told them that, and there has not been a response since.

UPDATE: I sent their corporate office a link to this post after it published and almost immediately someone from the hotel location and their corporate office got in touch with me to try to rectify the situation. I appreciate the follow-up but will proceed cautiously if staying at another property.

2) What post should you check out?

Bloom Darling, Flourish! on the blog The Elephant in the Room is about growth, fear, acceptance (or lack of), and Kenyan music. It’s interesting. You’ll probably learn something. Check it out.

3) What’s been going on this week?

Getting back into the swing of things after being on vacation for 10 days. Look for a blog post early next week about what all I got into during my time off.

4) What’s going on this weekend?

I have a writing workshop and am updating my headshot this weekend. I’m kinda nervous about that. Like I hope my double chin doesn’t make an appearance. Plus I feel like I’ve aged at least 5 years during the baby stage of my 3rd kiddo. So I hope the picture turns out okay and doesn’t trigger some weird mid-life crisis.

5) Did you miss this post?

When You Spend Maternity Leave With Your Husband…Twice

6) What did my kids create?

Pumpkins on accident. We carved pumpkins on the back porch last fall. I guess some seeds were left behind and because of all the rain we’ve had, this pumpkin plant is taking over our back porch!

Thanks for reading. How was your week? What are you up to this weekend?

  1. well at least you will have pumpkins for Halloween? Sorry to hear your experience at the hotel was so terrible. We usually like Embassy Suites for the two rooms, the good breakfast and service. it stinks that not only were these not good experiences for you, but the company didn’t do much to make it better.

    1. I hope we can keep it alive till the pumpkins are ready!

Yes, that’s exactly why we choose to stay there. The two rooms was nice, and the lady who made our omelettes was the best part of the stay.

Do you have any weekend plans?

      1. does sleeping count as a weekend plan? I can’t wait to see how your pumpkins fare over the next few months

  2. We recently had a bad experience at a Hampton Inn and I’ve chosen [so far] to not write about it. I’m sorry that your experience was so awful on so many levels. Ours was far less wrong, but like you we picked the hotel chain because we knew it’d be great. Wrong-o moose breath on that one.

I look forward to your jack-o-lanterns next fall. What a fun accident.

    1. Like I mentioned, I really don’t want to be negative. It really felt that nobody there cared though. At all.

Also, I do highlight positive expereinces, here on my blog and in person, when they occur. I’d rather focus on those, but this expereince really irked me. I’m sorry for your bad expereince too 😦

For what it is worth, since sharing this, I’ve gotten feedback that despite it’s name, Drury Inns are great places to stay. Who knew? Maybe we will try that next time.

Thanks! Fingers crossesd we can keep the plant maintained till the pumpkins are ready.

  3. Hi Lacey,
I’m just catching up on blog posts now––it’s been a busy time!! I’m meeting with a producer tomorrow to talk about forgiveness and exploring the options for creating a show about it. Please keep it in the Light!

I KNOW your headshots are going to turn out wonderfully. I think you’re beautiful inside and out, and my encouragement is to own it. 🙂

So funny on the pumpkin patch!!!! I guess you’ll (a) have plenty of pumpkins to decorate for Halloween and/or (b) lots of possibilities for yummy baked goods with pumpkin in it.

    Have a beautiful week.
    Love you,

    1. Ohhhh Debbie that is so exticing! I can’t wait to hear updates about it.

I had a migraine, so I didn’t make the headshots 😦 I had the perfect outfit and everything picked out too.

Yes! The pumpkin vine died, but we got about half a dozen pumpkins from it lol!

      How was your weekend?
