We are still back to school focused at my house right now, and what’s on our minds?
Supplies?
Clothes?
Nope.
Food!
That’s right. We’ve been playing around with weekday breakfast ideas, practicing for lunchtime in the cafeteria, and now we are dreaming up perfect after school snacks. I vividly remember coming through the front door after school feeling starved and not wanting to do or talk about anything until I ate.
And kids love snacks. Really, if adults were smarter we would get better results and less whining if we started calling the last meal of the day “snack time” instead of “dinner time”. Snacks are important kid business, especially after school snacks.
At our house, I create a variety of snack plates. Think of it as kids style tapas. Mix and match the following for endless combinations.
- Start with a fruit and/or veggie.
- Throw on a protein(s).
- Add a carb (because kids LOVE carbs).
VIOLA!
The result is the easiest (but also ultimate) after school snacks. Here are some examples.
Black olives, string cheese, pepperoni slices, and butter crackers.
Carrot and cucumber sticks, hummus, pita bread.
Apple slices, nuts, cheese crackers.
Raisins, peanut or almond butter, and animal crackers.
That’s it. Simple. Easy. Filling.
What is your go-to after school snack?
They’re all pretty good. Your kids eat them?

I find have better luck with them eating single ingreident items, My son is a texture eater. So the crunchier, the better.

I have never thought about introdcing food as a texture but I can see how that would work.

plus then the kids think they are getting a snack instead of lunch… and as you said they are more willing to eat snacks than meals

these are great snacks they would also make great lunches for kiddos who struggle to eat enough in the short time given for lunches at school. I often tell parents to pack a bunch of little things that can add up to lunch.

That’s a great idea. I do this sometimes for quick lunches or picnics on the weekends. It would work well with a bento-style box though.

I take issue with your statement: “because kids LOVE carbs.” Why are you limiting that premise to just kids? I’d humbly suggest that all human beings, young and old, LOV carbs. 😉

We go with fruit or chips. Occasionally, we stop by sonic. (We live 25 minutes from school.)

Wow! 25 minutes one way?
Oh we love swinging into Sonic, especially for drinks at happy hour time.

Yes, our tiny town lost it’s cool when my oldest was in kindergarten. We tried another school first, but hated it. So…it’s worth the drive & we are happy.
