Book Reviews: Drums of Autumn, We Were Liars, and The Flight of the Silvers

I’ve been reading a lot, but it’s been a hot minute since I have posted any reviews. So I am getting back into it with these three books that kept me company during late night newborn feedings last year. If you’ve read any of these I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.  Also, tell me about what you are reading now. Anything good?

 

Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon

I’ve been reading The Outlander Series for a few years and following along as new seasons premiere on Starz. The first book and season of the TV series drew me in right away. There is mysterious time travel, different periods for historical reference, and an intense love story.

The second book in the series, Dragonfly in Amber, was still good but not as good. The third book, Voyager, almost lost me completely. It was all over the place. At 800+ pages, these are long books, and I am a slow reader. I wasn’t sure if I was committed to continuing the series.

But Drums of Autumn was redeeming. The storyline is settling in a single location, the American colonies. Previous and well-liked characters are back and look like they might be around for a while. There is still adventure and love, but it is more focused again. I’ve decided at some point I’ll continue on to book 5, The Fiery Cross.

 

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars is a YA phycological thriller about the wealthy Sinclair family who spends summers on their own private island near Martha’s Vineyard. One summer the group of teenage cousins comes together to help Cadence Sinclair remember a suppressed memory about an incident from a previous summer.

I was surprised at how captivating this book was. I devoured it and then found myself thinking about it days after I had finished. I speed through it, and then it lingered with me. Since it is such a quick and interesting read, I’d recommend it to anyone.

 

The Flight of the Silvers by Daniel Price

I had high hopes for this book, a post-apocalyptic trilogy with a twist premise. I was prepared to follow it all the way through. Really, I am just glad I was able to finish the first book, The Flight of the Silvers. ( I mean that title, right!? Even the title had my hopes up.)

Without warning, our world ends. Beautiful beings appear and save a select few who are transported to a different place, like Earth, but not Earth. The small group of survivors are being hunted in the new world while trekking across the country, attempting to find the one man they believe could have answers and help for them.

I still feel like there might be a good story and book in here somewhere. As I was reading it though I kept thinking, “So this is what happens when a book doesn’t have a decent editor.”

It’s obvious the author is a man as every single female character’s chest is described. He has this way of using opposites to describe everything. This isn’t a quote from the book, but it is like, “Even though she was small chested, she was bigger than life.” And at 600+ pages, it definitely could have been trimmed down.
